Muscimol is the primary active compound in Amanita mushrooms. It exists in the fresh mushroom largely as ibotenic acid, which converts to muscimol through decarboxylation — drying and gentle heat accelerate the process.
The practical consequence is that potency varies enormously between caps and between preparations. Two mushrooms of the same weight can differ by a factor of several, which is exactly why “one mushroom” is not a unit of measurement and why fixed-weight, lab-documented products exist at all.
